Renminbi vs the dollar: how to time your exchange

Practical tips for spotting a good rate and avoiding the worst of the volatility.

The RMB/USD pair moves for many reasons — Fed decisions, PBoC fixings, trade data — but for most travellers and businesses, timing comes down to two habits.

1 · Watch a 30-day range, not a single day. Our rates page shows a rolling window: if today's desk price sits in the lower third of the last month, that's usually a good moment to buy dollars. 30 天窗口比单日更能反映真实趋势。

2 · Set an alert, don't stare at the screen. Logged-in customers can add USD (or any currency) to their watchlist and get pinged when it crosses a level you set. Free, silent when nothing is happening, useful when it counts.

3 · Split the trade. Splitting a large exchange across two or three days averages your rate and cushions a bad tick. Boring — and it works.

Fiat or stablecoin? Choosing how to move money abroad

When USDT beats a bank wire — and when it doesn't.

Stablecoins like USDT settle in minutes for pennies. Bank wires can take days and cost more in fees than the FX spread itself. So why not always use crypto?

Use USDT when the receiving side already has a crypto wallet or exchange account, the amount is above a few hundred dollars (so the flat network fee is trivial), and you want same-day arrival.

Use a bank wire when the receiver expects fiat in a specific bank account (tuition offices, landlords, most suppliers), the amount is small enough that wire fees don't dominate, or a paper audit trail matters for tax.

Hybrid: many TCE customers convert RMB → USDT with us, then off-ramp abroad locally. It's often the cheapest total cost — see our P2P guide for how to do that safely.

Understanding buy/sell spreads

What the two numbers on our rate board really mean for your pocket.

Every currency on our rate board shows two prices: a buy and a sell. The gap between them is called the spread, and it's how a desk covers cost and risk.

The lower (buy) number is what the desk pays when you sell that currency to us. The higher (sell) number is what we charge when you buy it from us. The mid-market rate — the "true" number quoted on financial news — sits in between.

A tighter spread means a better deal. On major fiat pairs (USD, EUR, GBP), TCE typically runs a spread of around 2%, well inside what most banks quote. On crypto, spreads are tighter still — usually 1.5% or better on USDT, BTC and ETH.

Staying safe from FX scams

Five red flags every trader should know before sending money.

Scammers targeting FX customers rely on urgency and off-platform payment. Here are the five biggest tells.

  1. Rates that are "too good." If a stranger offers 5% better than the desk board, it isn't a favour — it's bait.
  2. Pressure to move fast. Real trades wait for you to check details. "Send it in the next 10 minutes" is a scam script.
  3. Off-platform chat. Once the conversation leaves TCE for a private WeChat or Telegram, escrow protection goes with it.
  4. Asking for gift cards, top-ups or "test" transfers. No legitimate FX settlement uses these.
  5. New account, no history. On TCE P2P we show completed-trade counts on every profile — use them.

Every trade you keep on-platform is protected by escrow — see how →

Sending school fees overseas the smart way

Cut the cost of tuition transfers with the right timing and rails.

Tuition transfers are one of the biggest, most predictable FX bills a family pays. A little planning saves real money.

Book early. University due-dates are fixed months in advance. Watching the rate for even four weeks before payment day gives you room to hit a good level rather than take whatever Monday morning happens to show.

Match the beneficiary bank. Some UK, US and Australian institutions accept RMB directly through partner banks; others need USD, GBP or AUD in a specific account. Get the details from the university before you convert — nothing hurts more than paying FX twice.

Keep receipts. TCE issues a stamped exchange receipt on every settlement — useful for the university, and for later tax questions. Learn more about tax refunds →

Crypto on/off-ramps explained

How Renminbi becomes Bitcoin — and back again — at TCE.

An on-ramp turns fiat (like RMB) into crypto. An off-ramp does the reverse. Everything else — trading, swapping, holding — happens in between.

TCE runs both. To on-ramp, you fund an order in RMB via Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay or bank transfer, and receive USDT, BTC or ETH into your wallet. To off-ramp, you send crypto to our desk address and receive RMB into your bank card, all with an escrow-protected settlement window.

Because ramps involve a fiat leg, they need KYC — a one-time identity check that then applies to every future trade. Our KYC guide walks through it in under five minutes.
